What to Expect at Your First Martial Arts Class in Blaine, MN

So you’ve been thinking about trying martial arts. Maybe a friend mentioned it. Maybe you’ve been looking for a new workout. Maybe your kid has been begging you for months. Whatever brought you here, welcome — and here’s the good news: walking into your first class is the hardest part.

At Prodigy Martial Arts in Blaine, MN, we see first-timers walk through our doors every week. Some are nervous. Some are excited. Most are a little bit of both. And almost every single one of them leaves their first class with a big smile on their face.

Here’s what you can expect when you come in for your first class.

1. A Warm Welcome

From the moment you walk in, you’ll be greeted by our front desk staff or one of our coaches. We’ll take a few minutes to learn about your goals — are you interested in fitness, self-defense, competition, or just trying something new? There are no wrong answers.

Our gym at 1630 101st Ave NE in Blaine is clean, spacious, and fully equipped. You’ll notice right away that it feels different from a typical fitness gym — there’s a real community here, and people look out for each other.

2. No Experience Required

One of the most common things we hear from new students is ‘I don’t know anything — is that okay?’ Yes. Absolutely yes. Every black belt started as a white belt. Every champion had their first day. Our beginner-friendly curriculum is designed to meet you exactly where you are.

Whether you’re joining a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, a Muay Thai Kickboxing session, or enrolling your child in our Kids Martial Arts program, you’ll be introduced to the basics in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

3. What to Wear

For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing is perfectly fine — gym shorts and a t-shirt work great. If you decide to stick around (and we think you will), we’ll walk you through what gear makes sense for your program.

4. The Class Structure

A typical class at Prodigy runs about 45 minutes. You’ll start with a warmup to get the blood flowing and the body loose. From there, the coach will introduce the technique of the day — breaking it down step by step. You’ll drill it with a partner, ask questions, and start to develop your feel for the movement.

5. You’ll Be Sore — And You’ll Love It

Martial arts uses muscles you didn’t know you had. After your first class, you’ll probably feel it in your hips, your core, and maybe your forearms. That’s completely normal. The soreness fades quickly as your body adapts, and most students notice real gains in strength, flexibility, and endurance within just a few weeks.

Ready to Give It a Try?

Your first class at Prodigy Martial Arts is completely free. No commitment, no pressure. Just come in, move your body, and see if it’s a fit. We’re located near the Blaine National Sports Center and serve students from across the North Metro — Coon Rapids, Andover, Ham Lake, Fridley, Brooklyn Park, and beyond.
