If you're looking to get into Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, Prodigy Martial Arts in Blaine is the gym to check out. I came back to grappling after a nearly two-decade hiatus from wrestling, and I was honestly concerned I was getting "too old" to start my BJJ journey — but I quickly realized that starting later in life isn't uncommon here at all. There are many members who didn't begin until their later years, and that realization was both humbling and incredibly motivating.
A huge shoutout to the owners Justin, Thao, and Mike, and to the excellent instructors and professors who make this place what it is. Everyone here comes from all walks of life and every age group, and there is absolutely no ego on the mats. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner, you'll get the guidance and introduction you need — from an instructor or a fellow member.
The facility is impressively clean compared to other gyms, and the class options are fantastic. With plenty of morning and evening sessions, open mat opportunities, and No Gi classes offered as well, it's easy to build a schedule that works for you. Classes can be relaxed and fun or advanced and strenuous depending on what you're looking for — there's something for everyone.
It's also worth noting that this isn't a fight-oriented gym, so you won't be surrounded by people training MMA. It's a welcoming, community-driven environment that makes martial arts accessible to anyone willing to show up. Don't be intimidated — we all started from the same place.
Even if Prodigy isn't the closest gym to you, I'd strongly recommend making the drive. And if you're still on the fence, drop in for a free class. You won't regret it.
Response from the owner:Wow…thank you for such an awesome review. Reading this really means a lot to all of us.
One of the biggest things we’ve always wanted at Prodigy is a place where anyone can walk through the doors—regardless of age or experience—and feel like they belong. Hearing that you came back to grappling after almost 20 years and found that here is exactly what we hope for.
Thanks for the kind words about our coaches, the gym, and the culture. We have an amazing group of members who make this place what it is, and we’re grateful you’ve become part of it.
We appreciate you recommending us, especially to people who might be nervous about getting started. Hopefully your story encourages someone else to take that first step.
Looking forward to seeing you on the mats! Thanks again for being part of the Prodigy family. 👊
